

Gonzalez was born in Torrance, California, and was raised by his mother, Judy, who worked two jobs to support the family.

He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. Known for his durability and rarely fumbling, Gonzalez appeared in 270 of 272 regular season games and lost only two fumbles on 1,327 touches. Gonzalez finished his career with 14 Pro Bowl selections, the most for a tight end and second-most in league history, in addition to receiving six first-team All-Pros. He was previously at CBS Sports and Fox Sports. Since retiring in 2013, Gonzalez has served as a football analyst and is with Prime Video. During his last five seasons, he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Gonzalez spent his first 12 seasons with the Chiefs. Regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time, he is the NFL's all-time leader in receiving yards and receptions by a tight end, along with ranking third in overall receptions. He was drafted in the 1st round (13th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.

He played football and basketball in college at University of California, Berkeley (California).
